Hi, I’m Helen

I’m a perinatal trauma specialist, midwife, and most importantly, a mum.

I’m based in Bendigo, Australia. I’ve been a midwife for over 15 years, and more recently I’ve been an academic - the end of my PhD is finally in sight!

As a midwife, I thought I understood birth trauma until I experienced it firsthand with the birth of my first baby, Emilia. Her pregnancy was complicated, and she arrived prematurely. We spent time in NICU and SCN, and while we eventually made it home, the emotional impact lingered. At the time, my distress was seen as a predictable response to the circumstances. It was described as depression and anxiety, but it wasn’t until months later that someone named it as post-traumatic stress. That moment of being seen and heard changed everything.

Since then, I have been on a journey of both learning and unlearning. I have deepened my knowledge through professional development and now specialise in supporting those impacted by birth and perinatal trauma. My expertise has also guided me through deeply personal experiences, including a subsequent pregnancy and the heartbreaking loss of our beloved little boy Lincoln, a prolonged and unsuccessful IVF journey, and then the complex emotional landscape of pregnancy after loss with our surprise baby, Sullivan.

I have contributed to research, spoken at conferences, and collaborated on publications, podcasts, policy, peak body position statements and service design. My aim is to help improve maternity care so that it is safer, more respectful, and trauma-informed for all who engage with it.

Welcome to my little corner of the web. Here, you will find ways to connect with me, whether you are looking for support to process a past experience, prepare for a future birth, or collaborate professionally. I offer consultations, professional development, public speaking, and expert input into trauma-responsive service design and delivery. You will also find free resources and updates on my research. Please feel welcome to reach out by email. I would love to hear from you.
